Momma Joy

Little Kai, you are just over 3 months old now!  These first few months are always a sleepless adventure, but I’m loving it still.  You’re favourite game right now is when your dad lifts you high up into the air and says “Super Baby!”  You are so strong — you hold yourself stiff as a plank and you laugh and laugh.  You have a deep, throaty laugh that seems so funny coming from such a tiny boy.

Little Riv, we took Kai to get his first immunization last week.  I had prepared you ahead of time because I did not want you to worry since you had recently received your flu shot at the same clinic.  We approached the nurse at the desk and you said quite proudly from your position on the stroller board, “This is my brother Kai.  He needs his shot.”  The nurse replied, “My goodness!  You speak so well for such a little girl.  And what’s your name?”  You looked at her rather suspiciously and then said, “River doesn’t need a shot.”

Little Riv, this morning we were listening to a band on the radio (CBC Foodbank Day) and you said, “Momma, this is jazz!”  And you were right!  Apparently your dad has been teaching you to recognize different music genres.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so proud.  Are you sure you are only two?

Little Riv,  your favourite game right now is “Momma chase you?” — or Daddy or Kira for that matter.  You ask us to chase you and then you run around the dining room table, giggling.  We have to turn you around so you change directions or you’d fall down dizzy.  We are happy to do it because it makes you so very happy.

Little son, you’ve started smiling and cooing like crazy.  It gives me such joy hold you in my arms and see the happiness in your wide, sweet gray eyes.  You positively wriggle with delight.

When I was changing the babe, he decided to poop all over me!  Little Riv, you thought it was hilarious!  You laughed so hard, you had to resort to sign language and kept signing, “More, more!”  When you finally recovered your breath, you said “More poo, Momma?  Kai poo more?”  Glad to amuse you sweetie.

Little Riv, at your two-year check up, the doc asked me, “Is she speaking in 2 word sentences yet?”  At that moment, you decided to ask very politely, “River have a sticker please?” (you always get a sticker at the doctor).  Check that box!

Little son, I am so glad to have you in my arms. I forgot how much I love having a small babe at the breast.  With such busy days, I love the quiet hours we have in the middle of the night, just the two of us.  I love the soft curve of your head and the roundness of your cheek, and the way you relax in my against my body with complete fullness and contentment.

Took a little break during the last weeks of my pregnancy, but I’m proud to announce the birth of our son in early October.  Now I have two little ones bringing me joy!

Little Riv, as I watched you colouring at your little craft table, I saw a face full of earnest concentration.  Your tiny head was tilted, your hair curling sweetly against your neck, the light making your ears look pink and translucent.  You are so small now that your feet dangle from the chair and the crayons look too big for your hands.  But in that moment, I didn’t see my baby — I had a glimpse of the little girl you will become.
