Momma Joy

You have been sick, my poor, sweet babies.  We have had our butts kicked by colds and RSV, including trips to the hospital for both of you.  My joy today is that you are both healthy again.

Little Riv, you’ve started taking art classes on Thursday mornings.  Your Daddy says you love painting and play dough the best, and he proudly brings home your art and hangs it on our fridge each week.  This morning as you set off with him you said with delight, “Momma, I’m going to get messy!”

Little Riv, your Auntie gave you a toy this Christmas who has quickly become a boon companion.  She has been dubbed “Dolly”.  Dolly comes to bed with you, plays great games and often sits at your little table while you serve her lunch from a purple picnic basket.  You eat your own lunch sitting across from her and often ask her if she is enjoying her lemonade and pie.

Little Riv, you are a wonderful big sister.  The other night you asked me to read to you, but your Daddy and I were still eating dinner, so I asked you to read to yourself for a bit.  Instead, you pulled your little armchair up beside your brother’s baby seat and began reading him a book.  You were very careful to hold it up so he could see the pictures.  “Kai, once upon a time…”

Little Riv, you have an amazing imagination.   This morning, you were in your playroom having a whole conversation with your Dolly.  At first, I thought you were talking to me and I asked if you needed anything.  You looked at me with exasperation and said, “No, Momma — just make lunch!”  Okay then!

Little Riv: “Lenin is eating a pumpkin.”  Momma: “Huh?”  It took me several moments to realize that you were looking at your Dad’s Economist magazine which featured (a) a picture of Lenin and (b) a picture of an orange globe.  Logically, Lenin is eating a pumpkin.

Little Riv, we’ve had snow this week!  You and I had a very special snow day together, the first of many I hope.  As soon as the snow stopped, we bundled up and went to the park.  You loved stomping and making footprints in the powder.  You laughed very hard watching all the dogs doing somersaults in the drifts.  We built a little snowman, complete with sticks (5 arms and a nose), and a snow hat that you sculpted yourself.  Then you knocked him down and we made him into snowballs and practiced our pitching arms.  When you got too cold, we came home and had cuddles and chocolate.

Little Riv, we took Kai to get his first immunization last week.  I had prepared you ahead of time because I did not want you to worry since you had recently received your flu shot at the same clinic.  We approached the nurse at the desk and you said quite proudly from your position on the stroller board, “This is my brother Kai.  He needs his shot.”  The nurse replied, “My goodness!  You speak so well for such a little girl.  And what’s your name?”  You looked at her rather suspiciously and then said, “River doesn’t need a shot.”

Little Riv, this morning we were listening to a band on the radio (CBC Foodbank Day) and you said, “Momma, this is jazz!”  And you were right!  Apparently your dad has been teaching you to recognize different music genres.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so proud.  Are you sure you are only two?

Little Riv,  your favourite game right now is “Momma chase you?” — or Daddy or Kira for that matter.  You ask us to chase you and then you run around the dining room table, giggling.  We have to turn you around so you change directions or you’d fall down dizzy.  We are happy to do it because it makes you so very happy.
