Little Riv, when you go to bed each night, we read a book and then we lie down together in “big bed” and sing songs together until you fall asleep. Tonight, you made up a song for me. “Dear Momma,” you sang, “I love you, love you/Close your eyes/Go to sleep, Momma.” You made up a little tune and sang some parts in your own pretend language that you use to tell stories, but you always came back to the same refrain. Thank you for my lullaby, my precious being.

Heard from the backseat: “Momma, please be quiet. Daddy is driving. You need some manners.”
Momma: “I’m just talking to your Dad, River, it’s fine.”
River: “No, Momma. Daddy is driving. This is a serious moperation!”
This is now our family codeword — anything important is a serious moperation.

Little Riv, you went to your first drama class today at Arts Umbrella, and you just loved it. This is your second independent activity (you took a Bright Stars dance class in the Fall). We plan to start you in an arts preschool program in the Spring.
Each time I pick you up and carry you, we have a little ritual. I say, “You are such a big girl now! How did you get to be so big?”
Lately you’ve started saying it before I do. “My goodness!” you say, “I’m a big girl! How did I get to be so big?”
My sentiments exactly, my darling girl.

Little Riv, you are an excellent baker. You and I have been baking muffins, cookies and cinnamon buns when little bro is having his nap. You love measuring and counting and stirring — although when we combine the wet and dry ingredients you are not too keen on the batter getting “sticky-icky”. We sewed some pretend oven mitts for you to use in your little kitchen this week, and you were thrilled to trace your hands and make a pattern.

Kai-guy you are a busy boy these days, always wanting to walk on your own (not big on holding Momma’s hand!). You tend to take off on the sidewalk, in the park, down the aisles of Choices Market, etc. Each time you do, your big sister shouts, “Baby on the run!” and tears off after you (to save you or encourage you, I’m never really sure which).

Little Riv, I think your favourite part of Christmas was the carols — you have been singing for a month. Of course you do put your own spin on them:”Good tidings we bring/ To you and your chin/ We wish you a Merry Christmas/ And a happy well Year.” Or “Peas on earth and mercy mild/God and zebras reconciled.” Pretty good for only 3 if you ask me!

Little Riv, you are the most beautiful child. I love to pick you up and hug you, to feel the tiny pearls of your spine and your strong little limbs, and to kiss your soft, sweet cheeks. You are my joy, and it is a miracle to me that I made you! Thank you for being my child.

Little Riv, you love to snuggle so much. The other night you had a bad dream and so I brought you in “big bed”. You curled up on my pillow and we wrapped our arms around one another. You twirled your fingers in my hair and I held your tiny hand until you fell asleep. I hope I’ll always be able to make you feel better.

Little Riv, at dinner the other night, you noted that while Momma, Daddy & River all had teeth, baby Kai does not. You gave this some careful consideration, nodded decisively, and stated firmly, “We need to buy Kai some teeth!”
