Momma Joy

Little Kai, you are just my little love bug.  You adore your sister.  Every morning, the first thing you say is, “River!  See!”  You shimmy out of bed and hunt through the house until you find her.  “Riv, hugs!” you say.  You love your family and you are happiest when we are all together.

Little Kai, you are a singer now.  You initiate singing “Head & Shoulders” by pointing and saying, “Nose, nose!”  When we sing the “This Train” song, you sing the refrain of “Choo, choo!”  You also applaud for Momma whenever I sing with you (you are very gracious, love).

Little Kai, you love all living creatures.  The other day, you sat beside Kira-dog, put your arm around her back and ever so gently laid your cheek against hers.  You hugged her and made little kissing noises.  You make excellent animal sounds — from the “meeh, meeh” of a sheep in a picture book, to an excited chirp whenever we see a bird outside.

Little Kai, you love to dance!  When the stereo is on, you clap your hands and spin in a slow circle.  I love the way you crouch down a little and hop from one foot to the other.  Your favourite song is “Open and shut/ and open and shut/ And give a little clap!”  You clap along with me and giggle in anticipation of the tickle part of the song.  Bless you for being such a sweet little boy.

Little Kai, you are a terrible sleeper — there are no two ways about it.  We have tried everything (I mean it) and while there is some improvement, you still spend the second half of the night in bed with me.  I know that, one day, you won’t need me the way you do now.  So I savour your milky kisses, your chubby wee arms and solid little body, even at 3 a.m.

Kai-guy you are a busy boy these days, always wanting to walk on your own (not big on holding Momma’s hand!).  You tend to take off on the sidewalk, in the park, down the aisles of Choices Market, etc.  Each time you do, your big sister shouts, “Baby on the run!” and tears off after you (to save you or encourage you, I’m never really sure which).

Little Kai, you are a man of few words, but you are an excellent communicator.  A couple of days ago, when I asked if you wanted to get out of bed, you said, “No, no, no.” (You never say “no” just once, it’s always three times).  You made kiss noises and snuggled up to me.  We had some great cuddles and then you rolled away and signed, “All done!” and said, “Up!”  You are just as I dreamed you would be — a sweet, sturdy, affectionate little fellow.

Little man, you are walking with enthusiasm!  You started toddling from Momma to Daddy a few weeks ago.  You pull yourself up and waddle-tromp all around the apartment.  You love to walk over to me for a little kiss or pat, as if you are saying, “This is new, but it’s okay, right?”.  And they you are off again, circling the table, or chasing your sister or the dog.  You still have a baby boy body, with a long torso and a chubby bum and legs, so your gait is rocky and wide.  But you are on your way my boy, laughing at your own audacity, with your arms open wide and reaching to they skies.
