Momma Joy

Little Kai man, you turned 1 last week!  Where did the time go?  We had a big party with your grandparents and your uncles on Thanksgiving Monday because you are my Thanksgiving baby.  We had turkey and pumpkin pie, and a big, blue puppy cake that River and I made just for you.  I am very grateful for you, my son — for your beautiful smile, your belly laughs and silly sense of humour, and for your wonderful hugs.  So this week (our first posts in a while) will be devoted to you in honour of your birthday.

Little Kai, you learned to crawl last week and nothing can stop you now! You are the most curious boy. You will crawl to a toy, examine it from every angle with the most serious face, bang it up and down and then toss it! Then you chase it all over again.

Little Kai, you’ve had a lot of milestones in the past two weeks.  You can sit up on your own now (with pillows behind you just in case!), you’ve started solid food, and you have two teeth coming in.  You love sitting up because it makes it easier to play with Daddy and Riv – you all love laughing together.

Little Kai, you have the best laugh – one you’d never expect from a baby.  It is a nasal, husky chuckle that comes deep from your little buddha belly.  Your feet and neck are very ticklish and you love playing “This little piggy”.

Little Riv, at dinner the other night, you noted that while Momma, Daddy & River all had teeth, baby Kai does not.  You gave this some careful consideration, nodded decisively, and stated firmly, “We need to buy Kai some teeth!”

You have been sick, my poor, sweet babies.  We have had our butts kicked by colds and RSV, including trips to the hospital for both of you.  My joy today is that you are both healthy again.

Little Kai, you love your Daddy more than anything.  As soon as you see him each morning, it’s as if your whole face becomes your smile — your eyes, your mouth, your cheeks just lift with joy.  You kick your feet and wave your hands and stretch your little back as if your entire body is saying, “Pick me up!  I love you so.”

Little Riv, you are a wonderful big sister.  The other night you asked me to read to you, but your Daddy and I were still eating dinner, so I asked you to read to yourself for a bit.  Instead, you pulled your little armchair up beside your brother’s baby seat and began reading him a book.  You were very careful to hold it up so he could see the pictures.  “Kai, once upon a time…”

Little son, you rolled over today!  At first, we both hardly noticed — you were doing your “tummy time” and I was rubbing your feet to help you relax.  Then you just flipped in my hands and you were on your back!  We both just looked at each other, as if to say, “Hey, how did that happen?”  And then you broke out in giggles.

Little Kai, today at Music Together I could tell you were really starting to get into the groove!  You were smiling and talking — Elyssa kept laughing and saying you were trying to sing along (and it did sound like that).  It makes my heart lift to see my little guy wriggling around on your blankie, having such fun.
